John ("Jack") Stewart McKay
September 6, 1926 - August 19, 2023
Tribute
In the village of Strathclair, Manitoba, John Stewart McKay was born on September 6, 1926 to John R. and Gertrude (Rea) McKay. When he was a young boy, his family moved to Trail, BC where his father ran a general store. In the early 1950s, Jack met his beloved wife Phyllis and her young daughter Barb. They married that same year and were blessed with 2 more children. In 1953, Jack moved to Kimberley to take a job at Cominco.
Jack loved being out in the mountains and teaching his bush craft to his sons. The family spent many years hunting and fishing throughout the Kootenays. Jack was very active in the Kimberley Fish and Game Club. In their adult years, sons Colin and Bob spent many hours together with their Dad hunting and fishing. Jack spent many hours telling stories of his adventures in the mountains with Phyllis and his family. He continued to recount those stories until his passing.
Jack retired from Cominco in 1984 and continued to spend time in the mountains and in his woodworking shop.
Left here to miss him are his beloved children Colin McKay (Laura Cooper), Barb (Les) Fenton as well as his grandchildren; Niki, Cory, Rayleen, Wayne, Darlene, Darryl and Alex. Also left are his great grandchildren; Kayd, Kiva, Madi, Felicia, Vanessa, Alvana, Shayla, Dawn, Michael, Brendon, Allana, Damian and Samuel. Jack was predeceased by his wife Phyllis, son Robert McKay, granddaughter Susan, great grandson Jeremy, and long-time partner Marianne.
If friends desire, memorial donations may be made in Jack’s memory to the BC Cancer Agency, 600 W. 10th Ave., Vancouver, BC V5Z 4E6
