CHRISTENSEN, Margaret Mabel (nee John)
1930 – 2018
On Sunday, January 14, 2018, Margaret Mabel Christensen passed away in Castlegar, BC at the age of 87 years. Our mother was born in Cranbrook on July 18, 1930 to William and Mabel John and a sister to Jack Gilbert John. She attended schools in Cranbrook and was a stenographer for the Unemployment Insurance office in Cranbrook for several years.
In 1953, she married Ivan Christensen and moved to Kimberley. A son, Ivan was born and later was joined by a sister, Linda.
Music played a great part in her life and she had great joy at playing the piano. She played the piano by ear since she was a very little girl. She took part in many music events. Mother formed a small singing group called Marg and the Mustard Cutters – the slogan being “we sing with relish”. Her chief aim was to entertain other seniors. Margaret was a member of the Kimberley United Church Choir for many years.
In July of 2011, Margaret moved to the Garden View Village in Kimberley. In February of 2017 she moved to Castlegar to be closer to her daughter Linda.
Left to mourn her passing are her children; Ivan (Margaret) Christensen and Linda (Don) Frew as well as her grandchildren; Erik and Erin Christensen, Christopher and Lindsey Frew and two great grandchldren Annika and Henrik. Margaret was predeceased by her beloved husband, Ivan Sr. on October 1, 1991, her father, William in July of 1951, her mother in July 1977 and her brother Jack in 1974.
Margaret was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
A celebration of life for Margaret will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at the Kimberley United Church at 11:00 am. A private family interment will follow in Cranbrook. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made in Margaret’s memory to a charity of one’s choice. Condolences may be left for the family at www.markmemorial.com

I am really sorry to hear of Your mother’s passing. I really enjoyed the years we played together at The Pines and other places. I was always amazed at how she could play the piano, and I did learn much from her. She and her talent will surely be missed in Kimberley.

I was very sorry to hear of your loss, Ivan and Linda. Your mom and mine were great walking friends and long time members of the Kimberley UC choir. I loved Marg’s laughter and the sheer joy she showed while playing the piano. Thinking of you and your family.

So very sorry to hear of Marg’s passing. I was working uptown at a store, in Kimberley, and she bought a doll that stood in the corner. She called the doll Becky. When she would come in the store, I would always ask, How’s Becky? She would give that SMILE and with a twinkle in her eyes, she would say, GREAT. Enjoyed her playing of the piano, when my Dad was up at Garden View. She was a beautiful LADY. May she RIP.

Dear Ivan and Linda (and families), I’m so sorry for your great loss. Living next door to your family for so many years, your Mom and Dad became very special friends to our family. We spent countless warm, summer nights sitting outside enjoying each other’s company. I have one particularly favourite memory of your Mom. When I was around 12 years old I would go over to your house and brush your mom’s beautiful red hair and she let me do whatever I wanted to do with it; the french roll was my specialty! Marg would almost go to sleep as I worked my magic on her. in return, she would play the piano for me and I just loved the boggy woggy. No one could play it like your Mom! I could have listened to her play for hours. I’m sure that had in influence on me taking piano lessons. I was also intrigued that she would paint her piano beautiful, brilliant colours. I never heard of anyone painting their piano; I thought it was wonderful! I know you all have precious memories of this amazing lady, “Margaret Christensen”. Love, Jean Klan (nee Phair)

Ivan and Linda and families we are so sorry to hear of your Mother passing away. We always tried to visit her when we were in town. The last time we visited Margaret was in Gardenview but did not seem to be very settled there. Your Mom and Dad were good neighbors to us. They were always the new neighbors on the street.
