Albert Leonard Sandberg

October 27, 1918 - March 28, 2020

Tribute

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather and great grandfather Albert Sandberg following an extended illness at the age of 101 years.

Albert was born in the little community of Krag, one mile south of Waldo, to Charles Gustav and Thekla Aurora Katrina Euphemia (Ihl) Sandberg.  He was the fourth son in a family of eleven children.  He served as a member of the Canadian  Army occupational forces in Europe following the Second World War.  Upon his return, after working various jobs, he married Susan Cullen and moved to take over his father’s farm on Bloom Creek.  It was here that he and Susan began raising their four children:  Laura, David, Leonard and Peter.

In 1962 the family moved to Chipka Creek, near Wardner, where Albert had bought the farm that had been owned for many years by his cousin Carl Bloom.  This enabled the children to attend school in Cranbrook and to participate in some of the athletic programs.  Albert and Susie became some of the biggest fans of their sons’ hockey and fastball games.  Albert had been an active athlete in his youth as well, winning the fastball league batting championship while he was stationed with the army in the Queen Charlotte Islands during preparations for overseas deployment.

One of his many fond memories was attending the first ever meeting of the Waldo Stockbreeders’ Association at the Waldo pool hall.  He became a lifetime member of this association which continues to this day in its 81st year.

Albert was predeceased by his parents and by all ten siblings.  He is survived by Laura Hughes (Doug McLaughlin), David (Janet), Leonard (Jude Gordon), Peter (Elaine), by grandchildren Sandra (Andrew Henderson), Steven (April), and Chelsea and also great grandchildren Mitchel, Carter and Gavin Henderson.  Along with immediate family he is also survived by many, many nieces, nephews and friends.

Albert was known as an especially gentle, quiet, caring, patient father with uncommon physical strength and endurance.  He will be sorely missed.

No memorial service is planned at this time.
