Edward Darrell Stairs

September 26, 1943 - February 17, 2023

Tribute

Edward Darrell Stairs passed away on Friday, February 17, 2023 at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital at the age of 79 years.  He was born on September 26, 1943 in Woodstock, New Brunswick as one of two children born to Darrell and Ilene Stairs.

Ed married Helen Macdonald on September 26, 1969 and they celebrated 46 years together.  He missed Helen dearly since her passing in 2015 and longed to be with her again.

Over the years, Ed and Helen had many foster children in their home.  Ed made a difference to many young people in his day.  He was also very involved with the Key Program in Cranbrook.  He would often use some of the boys from there to help him with jobs at the funeral home.

Ed was a Funeral Director at Mark Memorial Community Funeral Home for many years.  He had lived in different towns in BC – Penticton, Grand Forks and then to Cranbrook.  He truly enjoyed his job running the funeral home.  Ed also took barbering in New Brunswick and continued to be a barber in Cranbrook area for many years.

Ed enjoyed being member of a few clubs in Cranbrook such as the  BPOElks, the Masons, the Shrine and the Royal Canadian Legion.  He was an active participant in delivering poppy boxes to different businesses in town and was appointed as the hotdog boss for the cadets that sold poppies on the weekends.  He enjoyed all of it!

Ed leaves to mourn his passing his beloved sister, Marina Sears in New Brunswick as well as his six grandchildren; Brayden Stairs, Jordanna Stairs (Spencer Majkowski), Emily Stairs, Clay Stairs, Angela Ferebee and Adrian Ferebee.  Ed also left three great grandchildren; Wayne Stairs, Skyler Hamilton, Miles Ferebee and his daughter-in-law, Lola Stairs.  Ed leaves his niece and nephew in New Brunswick,  Barbara and husband Brian, Douglas and wife Janice as well as great nieces and nephews, Carson, Stephanie (Daniel) and Tyson and their families.

Ed was predeceased by his beloved wife, Helen Stairs and his daughter Jane Stairs on October 5, 2015 and on March 31, 2016 he also lost his son Tim Stairs.   Ed was predeceased by his parents, Darrell and Ilene Stairs and his brother-in-law Bob Sears.

A Memorial Service will be held for Ed on Friday, February 24, 2023 at 1:00 pm at Mark Memorial Community Funeral Home chapel.    If friends desire, memorial donations may be made in Ed’s memory to a charity of your choice.
